After teaching for 9 years I returned to university to realise my dream of becoming a speech and language therapist. I did my community service in Kuruman in the Northern Cape, where I worked with paediatrics, special needs populations and adults in acute care. I worked as part of a speech therapy team at Kuruman District Hospital and served as the head of the speech therapy department at Tswaragano District Hospital.
In 2018 I worked in a busy private practice in Cape Town where we provided ward care (mostly to adult stroke patients) and practice patients. Conditions treated included language and learning difficulties, articulation disorders, stuttering, dysphagia (swallowing problems), acquired neurological disorders (stroke and traumatic brain injury), voice disorders as well as special conditions such as cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
When a child or adult comes for speech therapy, I first do a case history. This is followed by an assessment. I use formal standardised assessments as well as informal assessments. A thorough assessment is the foundation for individualised therapy. Parents often ask ‘how long will my child need therapy for?’ This is very difficult to answer. Several children may present with the same type of diagnosis, but each may respond differently to therapy. Parental support is also vital.
I served as a Clinical Supervisor at UCT from March 2019 to July 2021.
Since September 2020 I have been working part time at Tygerberg Hospice Trust. I treat patients who have had strokes, traumatic brain injuries or other progressive neurological conditions. At the trust I assess, manage and educate patients and their families for swallowing and communication disorders.
Effective and timely feedback is a critical component of a successful collaboration.
Since we started attending her sessions Liza has been only amazing!!!! Very patient, selfless, caring always having a smile on your face and always willing to assist. My kid is extremely happy when having to attend her sessions. As parents we know that we have a busy Bee as a kid and often he does not concentrate for too long but for the 1hour or 30 minutes she knows just how to control him. Thank you so much for being part of our kids well-being.
Our boy looks forward to going to speech therapy. He gets so excited for his sessions. He has grown fond of Liza over time and has improved so much with his speech. He was even asking to go to her on Christmas Day, so that says a lot. Thank you so much Liza.
When thinking of taking my son to a therapist I was very nervous because what if my son and the therapist don’t gel. But since my son has been with Liza he really loves her.
The way she relates to my son is excellent. My son loves her a lot and he always excited when he must go to Aunty Liza. I like the way she has the patience and motivates my son to do better.
Liza gets whole-heartedly involved with my daughter. She does what my daughter likes and forms a relationship with her, which allows my daughter to be more willing to learn.
Every week she is excited to go to Liza. If a child is so eager to go and learn it should say a lot, especially one who gets so easily distracted. I wouldn’t change to any other therapist...
Before meeting Liza, my daughter did not enjoy meeting new people, but now she is more willing and open to playing with children. She’s become very social and tries to communicate with her peers now. Liza has affected more than her speech, as she is participating in various things. I could not be more pleased or grateful.
